PI Planning
All teams of the ART plan together, against the funded Feature backlog.
01What it's for
In PI Planning every team of the ART plans the next quarter together, in one room, against the funded Feature backlog that came out of the QBR. Dependencies are solved in the room, not in email.
Teams commit to PI objectives; Business Owners give each objective a business value.
02What it turns into on the old system
It becomes the quarterly project plan. Managers prepare the plan, teams are expected to confirm it, capacity is filled to 100%, and the result is a Gantt chart with new names.
03How you notice
- Managers arrive with the plan already made.
- PI objectives are lists of Features, without business value.
- There are no uncommitted objectives and no buffer.
- The plan is defended all quarter, even when learning says it is wrong.
04How to make it work
Leaders bring vision, priorities and constraints. Teams plan their own work and own their commitment.
Plan to about 80% of capacity; keep committed and uncommitted objectives.
Treat the plan as a hypothesis. Adjust it at the ART Sync as soon as learning or conditions change.
